Building Schools for Rural & Ethnic Minority Children in Vietnam

VNAH/HealthEd, through its Education Program, has completed many construction projects to improve the quality of education for schoolchildren in rural Vietnam. Thanks to the support of generous donors from Japan, U.S. and Vietnam, VNAH/HealthEd has built dozens of schools, training centers and boarding houses in deserving communities in central Vietnam and the Highlands.

In 2006, VNAH/HealthEd started a project to build 100 elementary schools for children in the remote, mountainous regions of Vietnam. The project, funded by Nippon Foundation (Japan), prioritized remote districts in the Central Highlands - a region with a severe shortage of classrooms. In the District of Dak To of Kon Tum Province alone, the program built 60 elementary schools and dormitories to provide safe, clean classrooms for more than 5,500 students and improve the overall quality of education for Dak To.

Local Vietnamese community and governments, including parents and volunteers, contributed labor and raw building materials toward the project. Talk about a team effort!

VNAH/HealthEd also received support and contributions from many individuals, private companies from Japan, Vietnam and the United States, as well as the Vietnamese-American community.

Over time, VNAH/HealthEd began to work closely with Asian Education and Friendship Association (AEFA, Japan) to expand construction projects to other rural areas such as the Northern Highlands.

The project also included an exchange "sistership" activity to foster and promote cultural, education and friendship between Vietnamese and Japanese students and teachers. VNAH/HealthEd works with AEFA to organize exchange activities, site visits and seminar workshops to improve teaching and learning techniques.

VNAH/HealthEd will deliver two more new elementary schools in Quang Nam and one dormitory in Tuyen Quang Province in August, in time for the new school year of 2015-2016.

The construction for five schools have started in January 2017 and are estimated to be completed by April 2017.
